HM Revenue & Customs Change Programme

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has embarked on a national programme to modernise its operations.  According to HMRC it needs to focus more on customer needs and save taxpayers’ money.  As a local authority Breckland Council has been approached to provide input to the Programme for Norfolk.  The Programme is being conducted on a regional basis and will continue throughout 2008 with implementation of the changes up to 2011.   Further information is available at www.hmrc.gov.uk/local/trasnforming-hmrc.htm

HMRC are seeking our views and stress they have only made initial proposals.  In Norfolk HMRC currently has locations at Dereham (30 staff), Great Yarmouth (140 staff) and Norwich (310 staff).  It proposes to retain two locations in Norwich only with 260 staff.

Breckland Council via the Economic Development Service has contacted HMRC to request a meeting to discuss the proposals in further detail.  Following this meeting a formal written response will be submitted (following Member approval).

Following the Policy & Development Review Panel 2 on the 24th July, the Council has now made a written response to the HMRC proposals with 14 Key Points it would like HMRC to answer.
