
Community development is about helping to increase the strength, effectiveness and quality of community life in Breckland.
The key purpose of Community Development work is collectively to bring about social change by working with communities to:
(1) Help identify their needs, opportunities, rights and responsibilities
(2) Help them plan, organise and take action, and to
(3) Help evaluate the effectiveness and impact of that action, all in ways which challenge oppression and tackle inequalities.

The Breckland Council Community Development team provide advice and guidance to the following:
· Village Appraisals and other community consultation
· Community groups
· Town and Parish Councils
· Area Partnerships
· New community projects
· Grants
· Breckland Play Forum

Breckland Council's Community Development Officers are all responsible for different areas within Breckland.The areas they cover have been defined by the Area Partnerships that have been established in Breckland district, they are:

Watton area and surrounding villages (Wayland Partnership) Attleborough area and surrounding villages (Attleborough Partnership) Swaffham area and surrounding villages (Iceni Partnership)
- Tony Needham
Dereham Area and surrounding villages (Dereham Area Partnership) Thetford Area and surrounding villages (Keystone Development Trust)

The Community Development Team produces a seasonal community newsletter; Breckland Community News. The newsletter has a different feature every week and includes inspirational success stories to spark ideas in your Town or Parish, as well as an opportunity to get your questions answered in Dear Community Development Team.
