ANSWERS
Do I need to use any new software? You
may need to download a specific browser which
should contain high encryption (128bit) to use our online transactions service.
The information you need is below under the 'is it safe' heading. We
cannot guarantee that your online transactions will work if you do not use the recommended specification.
What can I pay online? You
can pay for:
- council tax
- business rates
- housing benefits overpayments
- general invoices, that includes:
- Building Inspection fees
- Private water samples
- Annual subscription charges
- Senior Railcards
- Some other 'one off' items
- Commercial premises rent
- Hire of halls
- Pitches and rooms
- Pest control
- Service charges for tenants and leaseholder
What
else do I need?
- the bill that you want to pay [to copy the reference number]
- your debit card
Is
it safe? Yes it is safe. Your transaction will take place within a secure payment
system. We use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology, an internet standard supported by major internet
browsers. All of your personal and card details are protected by using 128 bit encryption for transmission
over the Internet. For a transaction to take place securely your browser must support 128 bit encryption.
If your browser does not support this level of encryption, click one of the links below to upgrade
your browser [these links are to the application home page only, we cannot specify a direct download
link due to the range of operating systems and versions that our customers use]; the links will open
in a new browser window:
If
you are in a public place we strongly advise that you make sure you are not overlooked as you enter
your details to prevent them being misused by somebody else.
It is also recommended to install any updates from Windows
Update (http://www.windowsupdate.com) Macintosh Update will
automatically present you with the Software Updates menu if updates are required. For more information
about manual updating go to http://www.apple.com/softwareupdate/ Please
check the system requirements on each update site to ensure your computer system will be able to accept
the upgrade.
What if it doesn't work? If
you cannot get into the payments page when you click on "make payment",
this is probably because your browser doesn't support 128 bit encryption. You are therefore prevented
from making a payment since anything less than 128 bit is not secure enough. To make the payment, you
will need to update your browser, this is very easy to do and is free - see the section above.
When will my payment be processed? Your
payment can only be processed during the working week. It will not be processed over the weekend or
on bank holidays. Payments made before 3.00pm (15.00) will usually be processed and show
on your council tax account on the following working day, all payments made after 15.00 hours will usually
be processed and show on your council tax account two working days later.
Which
cards do we accept? You can pay by:
- Visa debit card
- Switch
- Solo
We
do not accept any type of credit card or Electron, American Express and Diners Club.
Can I have a receipt? You will
receive a confirmation of your payment on your screen after you make the payment. You can print this
out as confirmation. Additionally, if you provide us with an email address, your payment confirmation
will be sent to you.
What if my card is refused? Cards
are not refused by Breckland Council - they are refused by your bank. There are many reasons why this
may happen and we suggest that you contact your bank direct.
Why
is Breckland Council offering online payments? Delivering council services electronically
is part of the Governments 'Implementing Electronic Government' agenda. Breckland Council must make
all services available to you electronically wherever possible.
Paying
By Direct Debit Paying by Direct Debit is the most convenient for you as we claim
the correct amount each month, on one of the three dates you can specify (5th 15th 25th of each month).
It is also the most cost efficient method for the council which helps every citizen. To pay your Council
Tax or Business Rates by direct debit please contact us.
