Elections in Breckland District

Democratic Services elections staff are responsible for the conduct of all elections:

  • District Council
  • Parish Council
  • County Council
  • Parliamentary
  • European Parliament.

You can only vote at elections if you are registered to vote. Refer to the section on electoral registration for more details on the electoral register.  

Breckland District Council
The District Council holds elections for all of its members every four years.  The District is divided into 36 electoral wards and there are 54 district councillors representing the wards.  The date of ordinary elections is usually the first Thursday in May. The next elections are scheduled to take place in 2011. Refer to the councillors_wards_parishes section for more detailed information on Breckland's district and parish councillors.

Norfolk County Council
Norfolk County Council currently has 84 councillors elected from the County to make decisions about county-wide decisions (such as education and social services).  Breckland currently has 12 county councillors who serve for four years.  A list of all county councillors can be found at www.norfolk.gov.uk
Elections are held on the first Thursday in May, the next  election will be held in 2009.

Parliament
The District Council organises the elections for the South West Norfolk Parliamentary Constituency.  There is one Member of Parliament that represents this Constituency.  Parliamentary elections are held on a date decided by the Prime Minister, it must be within 5 years of the last general election.  The last general election was held on 5 May 2005.
