Breckland covers a large, varied and predominantly rural area. From the rich glacial clay lands of the south-east, to the south-western sands and forests of the Brecks; from the great river valley of the Wensum in the north-east to the chalk streams of the west, Breckland contains a range of distinctive and attractive landscapes.
The countryside is defined by slopes and streams, by trees, woods and hedges, while towns and villages are structured not only by the pattern of their roads and houses, but also by the distribution of their mature trees and green spaces.
Most of our wildlife depends on trees and hedges for at least some of its food and shelter and some species are wholly dependent on trees, whether they be alive or dead, growing singly or in hedges or woods.
The Tree and Countryside section is committed to ensuring that trees and hedges in Breckland, which are important aesthetically, culturally or biologically, are retained for the amenity of the inhabitants and visitors to the region.
