We had a very auspicious beginning to the reborn Tree Warden Scheme on April 27th 2004 at Dereham Football Club, when Jon Stokes from the Tree Council gave us a very enthusiastic presentation on the enormous breadth of benefits that the scheme can bring.
Jon spoke of the four main roles that he envisaged for Tree Wardens:
- To be the “eyes and ears” of the tree protection lobby within the local community.
- Tree Wardens can be the focus of local community involvement in organising and encouraging the retention of existing trees and the planting of new ones, and most importantly making people aware of the value of trees in their parish before the opportunity is lost to them.
- By extension, to be the promoters and leaders of practical work at parish level.
- To collect information. Parish surveys of hedgerows past and present, ancient and modern; veteran trees, hedgerow pollards and traditional orchards are deservedly popular topics.
Just over 30 people attended the meeting and subsequently another 30 have been put forward so that we now have around 60 Tree Wardens in Breckland. For more information on the Tree Warden Scheme click on the following link www.treecouncil.org.uk
