Artificial lighting in our society is increasing and can sometimes cause problems if used inappropriately. Light in the wrong place at the wrong time can be intrusive.
Environmental Health Officers have successfully dealt with complaints by acting as a mediator between parties giving advice on how to prevent light pollution. Environmental Health will respond to enquiries and complaints regarding light pollution.
What is light pollution?
Light pollution is probably best described as artificial light that is allowed to illuminate or pollute areas not intended to be lit.
How to prevent light pollution:
- For domestic security lights, a 150W lamp is adequate.
High power (300-500W) lamps create too much glare reducing security.
- Make sure the lights are correctly adjusted to illuminate only the surface intended.
Ensure they do not throw light onto a neighbouring property.
- Motion detectors on security lights should be properly adjusted.
They should only pick up the movement of persons in the area intended and not beyond.
