 LATEST NEWS

Breckland is proud to support Love Food Hate Waste

Did you know that around one-third of all the food we buy ends up in the bin, and that most of it could have been eaten? Did you know that the average family could save up to £600 a year just by cutting down on food waste? That’s why Breckland Council has teamed up with all the local authorities to launch a ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaign.

Along with local celebrity chef Galton Blackiston and some of Norfolk’s best-known food producers, your local councils are working together to put on some exciting events throughout the coming year with top advice on how to cut down waste and save money. Residents will also be able to try out some delicious new recipes concocted exclusively for the campaign by some of Norfolk’s top food producers.

It all started on Tuesday 3rd March at the Forum in Norwich where the campaign was officially launched by Galton Blackiston. The event was hugely popular and was attended by several hundred members of the public and invited guests. Council officers from around the county were on hand to provide advice on using up leftovers and planning menus, and some of Norfolk’s ‘Master Composters’ were also present to promote the most natural way to dispose of unavoidable food waste like vegetable peelings.

 WEEKLY ECO-TIPS

Each week we will be publishing a top tip to help you reduce your ecological footprint. Even very small decisions in the home can radically improve our green credentials!

This week’s eco-tip:

Eggs really do have a thousand uses.

If you boil or poach an egg, the water from the saucepan will take on lots of nutrients which are great for plants – just use the water from the saucepan instead of filling your watering can from the tap!

Crushed eggshells are also great in your compost bin, and they make an excellent slug repellent when crushed and scattered around flower beds.
