Education on recycling

' '

Remember … Reduce then Re-use then Recycle!
Buy less ... Buy second hand
Think about packaging

Always remember that even if you no longer want an item, somebody else might. If something is still clean and in good working order, consider donating your item to a charity shop or jumble sale. Car boot sales or advertising could help you sell on your unwanted stuff!

Did you know?

On average, a sixth of your annual food shopping budget goes to pay for packaging!

There are many examples of over packaged items in your local supermarket. Good examples are fruit and vegetables in plastic punnets, meat or fish in plastic trays and plastic carrier bags. Try to buy fresh foods loose and take your own re-usable bags or boxes to carry your shopping home.

Avoid disposable items

Think about buying re-usable items rather than disposables. This is especially true for nappies, but also razors, paper plates, cameras, plastic containers and many other items. If disposable nappies are an issue then real nappies are an environmentally sound and much cheaper alternative, even if they are used half and half. There is a £30 discount available to all Breckland residents who choose real nappies. If you are concerned about the time and effort involved in washing cloth nappies the there are laundry services available that provide this service at a very reasonable cost. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require any further information about real nappies.

Buy refillable items

Consider refillable products such as washing detergents, soap products, various beauty products and many other items.

Stop unwanted mail

At best junk mail is a great annoyance, at worst it is a major contributor to paper going to landfill.

You can help by taking these easy steps:

  1. For addressed junk mail
The Mailing Preference Service (MPS) is a non-profit organisation aimed at safeguarding your right to choose what post you receive. MPS can help to stop any addressed junk mail for free. The process can take up to 4 months and lasts for a minimum of 5 years without renewal. You may still receive direct mailings from companies you have dealt with in the past.

  2. For unaddressed junk mail
To prevent unaddressed junk mail, please contact the Royal Mail Door to Door Service. Over the following six weeks unaddressed junk mail will gradually be reduced. By using this service you may no longer receive the unaddressed information sent out by your District or County Council.

  3. Use Recycling Centres
Old household equipment, kitchen utensils, small electrical goods and the like, which are not on our recycling list, can be taken to one of the Recycling Centres operated by Norfolk County Council where they have a wider facility for metal and electrical scrap.
Dry cell battery and fluorescent tube banks are also available at Recycling Centres, whilst glass and textile banks are also provided here and at many other locations around the district. Please consider using any of these sites before disposing of items in you green wheelie bin. If you require any further information about Recycling Centres then please contact Norfolk County Council on 0844 800 8004.
