Breckland Lodgings Register |
![]() Would you like to rent out a room in your house? Or are you in need of accommodation? If so, we may be able to help… .
In partnership with Solo Housing, who have set up a network of lodgings across Norfolk, Breckland's Lodging Register offers help to single homeless people by matching landlords with suitable lodgers who are looking for accommodation. The scheme is aimed at landlords who have a spare room to rent and it can be a great way of earning some extra tax-free income. Solo Housing is a registered charity and landlords and lodgers can join the scheme for free. Landlords will be visited by one of Solo’s Homelessness Prevention Officers so they can understand what type of lodger the landlord wants. They also offer advice and guidance on the Health and Safety, legal and tax implications of becoming a residential landlord as well as helping with the official documentation. Most importantly they will offer guidance on how to go about selecting the right lodger and provide a free helpline for advice and support during a placement.
Potential lodgers are referred to Solo by our Housing Advice team and interviewed to check they are suitable for the scheme. Lodgers are then put in touch with a landlord offering the accommodation that best meets their needs. Lodger and landlord meet, and If both parties are happy, the move goes ahead.
“The scheme offers practical help at the time when people most need it, like during a relationship breakdown or when young people are leaving home for the first time” says Helen Manfield, Solo’s Homelessness Prevention Officer for Breckland. “It provides a way of tiding people over until they can afford a place of their own and can help break the link homelessness has with other problems such as job loss.”
Landlord Profile
One landlady who has joined the scheme in another area has now had 3 lodgers through Solo. She says, “without Solo’s help I wouldn’t even have considered letting my room. They did the work of finding someone suitable and provided the system and support”.
