Stray dogs can cause many problems including causing serious road accidents or biting a child as well as being stressful for the owner of the lost dog.
The Animal Warden Service will pick up strays. If a dog is picked up and it is wearing a collar and tag, and is microchipped, it is easier to reunite with its owner. To report a lost or stray dog please contact the Animal Welfare Officer on: 01362 858500 - Operational hours are 8am to 6pm weekdays and 10am to midday at weekends. An emergency service is available on weekdays between 6pm and 9pm for collection/delivery to kennels. Should you receive the automated reply as the Animal Warden is unavailable, please leave a short message including your phone number and they will give you a call back as soon as they can. If you have lost your dog , please visit the lost dogs pictures page to see if your dog is pictured there.
We will endeavour to reunite dog and owner as soon as possible. However, if this cannot be achieved and the dog has to be kennelled, there will be a charge to cover the kennelling and any veterinary costs, as per Dog Warden Fees detailed.
If the dog is picked up on subsequent occasions and has to be kennelled, there will be further costs as per above link.
Whilst the Council has a legal duty to deal with stray dogs, we have over the years tried to develop a broader service with an emphasis on encouraging responsible dog ownership. With this in mind the Dog Enforcement Control Officer offers the following services in addition to dealing with stray and lost dogs:
