Funding will help communities blaze an Olympic Trail

Local communities in Breckland can help blaze an Olympic trail around the district, thanks to a new 2012 Celebratory Grant Scheme.

Beginning on 17 June, the Breckland Torch Relay 2012 will make its way around the district. Communities along the route can apply for grant funding to stage celebratory events to mark its progress.  Groups in Breckland that are constituted and have a bank account are eligible to apply for funding up to £500 to hold events inspired by London 2012.

Eligible activities include –

  • Family sports days and community sports events
  • Art workshops to make flags, bunting or commemorative artwork
  • Film screenings on a sporting theme
  • Dance workshops and events to celebrate Big Dance
  • Community choir events
  • Village walks or trails
  • Joint celebration events between sports clubs and / or arts clubs

Breckland Council Executive Member for Localism, Community and Environmental Services Lynda Turner said: “The grant scheme is there to help community groups who want to mark London 2012 by holding their own local events. We will be launching the Torch Relay in style. Former Olympic athlete Paul Evans will light the flame at the Village Games in Watton and then run with it along the first leg of its route. ”.

The Breckland torch will travel through each market town in the district and designated surrounding area. Groups applying for a grant must hold their event during the week the torch moves through their area.
