Police and Crime Commissioner Election

Police and Crime Commissioner Election

The way that local Police Forces are governed is changing.

From November 2012, every police area in England (excluding London) will be governed and held to account by an elected Police and Crime Commissioner.

Notice Of Election

Local people can go to the polls on Thursday 15 November to elect the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Norfolk. The newly elected Commissioner will replace the existing police authority, and will be in place until the next PCC election in four years time. The Commissioner’s role will be to:

  • hold the chief constable to account;
  • identify the views and needs of Norfolk's communities to set local policing priorities;
  • set the police budget and precept;
  • set and update a police and crime plan;
  • hire and, if necessary fire, the chief constable.

Statement of Persons Nominated

To find out more about the Norfolk candidates and what their ideas and plans are before you vote, look for their election addresses on the Home Office website: www.choosemypcc.org.uk/candidates/area/norfolk.

About the election

The election will use the ‘supplementary vote system’; this means that people will be able to vote for a first and second choice candidate.

Norfolk’s PCC election will be carried out by the Returning Officers in each of the seven local authorities. The counts will take place on Friday 16 November. The count results from all seven authorities will then be pooled and the new PCC for Norfolk will be declared at the Norwich City Council count venue later that day.

The declaration will be made by Norfolk’s Police Area Returning Officer (PARO), Philip Hyde, the City Council’s Head of Law and Governance.
