Making sure the District is a safe place to live and work is a key priority for us
Community Safety is a statutory function for the Council. We have a duty under the Crime and Disorder Act of 1998 to work closely with other partners such as Norfolk Constabulary, Primary Care Trusts, Registered Social Landlords and other relevant agencies and authorities, to reduce crime and disorder in the district. We now work within what is known as the Breckland Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership of Breckland Against Crime.
The Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003 has placed responsibilities on the Partnership to address this lower level type of crime too, as it greatly affects the quality of life of all those who live and work in the area.
The Environmental Protection Team carries out a number of statutory functions including nuisance investigations (noise, smell and smoke), private water sampling, the control of contaminated land, local air quality controls with permitting of certain polluting industries and provides a stray dog and pest control service. The team is composed of 11 professionally trained members of staff who are happy to provide help, assistance and guidance on all of the above roles, although these will be enforced if appropriate.
