Population and migration

The National Census 2001

Every 10th year since 1801, the nation has set aside one day for the Census - a count of all people and households.

This is the most complete source of information about the population that we have. The last Census was held on Sunday 29th April 2001.

Every effort is made to include everyone, and that is why the Census is so important. It is the only survey which provides a detailed picture of the entire population, and is unique because it covers everyone at the same time and asks the same core questions everywhere, making it easy to compare different parts of the country.

The information in the Census allows Central and Local Government, Health Authorities and many other organisations to target their resources more effectively and to plan housing, education, health and transport services for years to come.

Migration

There are different types of identities for foreign nationals in England depending on the reasons for their migration. Below is a description of each and links to more information.

Migrant Workers
"Workers who move from one place to another to find work" (Source: Oxford English dictionary).
Most migrant workers in Breckland are from Portugal, but are increasingly from other EU member states. Workers can come from other countries if they have the appropriate visa.

Asylum Seeker
Someone who has left their country of origin due to a well-founded fear of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, membership of a social group or political opinion, and has applied to the Home Office for asylum within the UK.

Refugees
If an asylum seeker is granted asylum, they are then known as refugees and are granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
