Recycle banks are located throughout the district and provide a good way of recycling your unwanted paper, glass and textiles.
Recycle banks are installed, maintained and emptied by private contractors. We can make arrangements with contractors to install banks at new sites where appropriate. Community groups may be eligible to receive financial benefits, in the form of recycling credits, for use in community projects. If you would like any further information or you think a recycling bank would be beneficial in your area then please contact us.
Paper
Did you know?
Less than half of the paper used in the UK is recovered and over five million tonnes gets dumped in landfill sites every year!
Remember … Reduce then Re-use then Recycle!
Newspapers, magazines, junk mail and other clean paper can be recycled in your black wheelie bin. Please remove the plastic wrappings from junk mail, magazines and other similar items. Products made from paper mixed with other materials such as fruit juice cartons or wallpaper are not recyclable, because of the other components they contain such as plastic liners or foil.
We are unable to collect shredded paper in the black wheelie bins. This is due to the way our recyclables are processed at the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) run by Norfolk Environmental Waste Services (NEWS) at Costessey. In the black bin all the recyclable materials are mixed together, but for recycling they must be separated out. The separation of different materials is done both by hand and by machine. The machine recognises items by their original shape so, for example, anything about the size of a postcard or larger is recognised as paper. Where the paper is shredded into pieces much smaller than this the machine is unable to remove it from the mix and it can become entangled in moving parts. Shredded paper can be used as the dry component of your compost mix or taken to a paper bank where there is no need for the separation process.
Glass
Did you know?
- In Britain almost 200 glass bottles and jars are thrown away every second.
- For every tonne of glass recycled, 30 litres of oil can be saved.
Always remove any lids or caps as they can interfere with the recycling process.
Remember … Reduce then Re-use then Recycle!
Textiles
Did you know?
If every person in Britain purchased one item made from recycled wool a year it would save:
- 371 million gallons of water
- 480 tonnes of chemical dyes
- 4,571 million days of an average family’s electricity needs.
Remember … Reduce then Re-use then Recycle!
