Candidate to Councillor?

At a local level you are represented by District and Parish Councillors.  District Councillors represent Wards which are normally made up of a number of Parishes.  Parish Councillors either represent a whole Parish or, where the Parish is divided into Wards will represent the electors of that parish ward.

As well as sitting on the Council, Councillors may also sit on Committees or other forums which deal with specified responsibilities.  If you are interested in standing as a candidate for Breckland Council elections, there are certain criteria you must fulfil.  You must be:

  • 18 years of age or over at the date of the nomination; (for elections held on or after 3 May 2007)
  • a British or commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland or a citizen of another European Union state;
  • a local government elector within the district or;
  • have worked in the area for the past twelve months or;
  • have lived , or owned land/property in the area for the past twelve months.

You cannot stand as a candidate if you are disqualified from being elected by reason of any disqualification set out in section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972.

Nomination papers and supporting information relating to membership of Parliament and the County, District and Town and Parish Councils are obtainable from Electoral Services.

Nomination papers for elections to the European Parliament have to be obtained from and returned to the Regional Returning Officer for the Eastern Region (currently the Chief Executive of Huntingdonshire District Council.)

The next scheduled ordinary elections are:

  • Norfolk County Council - May 2009
  • European Parliament - June 2009
  • District Council - May 2011
