Social inclusion

' '

National research has identified that not only can social exclusion be devastating for individuals’ lives and their children’s life chances, but it also inflicts huge costs on the economy and society at large.

The Government’s Social Inclusion Unit’s definition of social inclusion is “what can happen when people or areas suffer from a combination of linked problems such as unemployment, poor skills, low income, poor housing, high crime, bad health and family breakdown” (www.odpm.gov.uk).

The Local Strategic Partnership for Breckland has developed a Social Inclusion Strategy, which aims to:

  • make a positive contribution towards the economic, social and environmental well-being of the local population; (make a positive contribution to those economic, social, and  environmental factors which contribute to social exclusion)
  • reduce inequalities of opportunity and poverty within the district; and
  • increase tolerance of difference and celebration of diversity.

Key stakeholders were consulted throughout the development of the Strategy, which the LSP Board approved in Summer 2007:   LSP Social Inclusion Strategy.
