Changing the Name of Your House
When choosing the name, the word THE and punctuation should not
form part of the new name.
For example
ROBINS NEST ROBIN'S NEXT WHITE
HOUSE THE WHITE HOUSE
Pick three names and state these clearly in order of preference
on the application.
On the site plan (which will be sent with the application), indicate
clearly the property where the change is to be applied.
A non refundable fee of £25.00 per application is applicable.
This needs to be enclosed with the application. Payment is accepted by debit card, postal order, bank
transfer or cheque.
Once we receive your application and payment, we will check the
three names in order of preference that you have supplied. If successful, we will write and confirm
the name that has been approved and given to your property. The approved name will also be sent to relevant
organisations who need to be aware of the change.
To change the name of your house, please complete the do
it online form or contact us for an application and site plan.
Naming a house
When a property has been officially numbered, a name can be added
to the address. However, the number must be retained in the address and displayed on the property.
Naming and numbering a new property
- If the property is located in an existing
numbered street, then the next logical number is allocated.
- If the property is not in a numbered street, then we ask the owner
to suggest a name.
- If the name is not acceptable, the owner will be asked for another
suggestion.
- We then confirm the new address to the owner and other interested
parties such as the emergency services, utility companies and various departments within the Council.
Street
name plates
We are responsible for ensuring that street name plates are provided
and fitted in suitable positions. In the case of a new development, the site developer is responsible
for the erection of name plates to our specification.
We are also responsible for repair and maintenance of street name
plates within the district whenever this becomes necessary, either due to accidental damage, vandalism
or normal wear and tear.
Naming / numbering of new streets and roads
- Once work has commenced, the site developer
is asked for name suggestions, preferably with a local or historical connection.
- The suggestions are forwarded to the local town or parish council
and Royal Mail for consideration and agreement. If unacceptable, the site developer may be asked for
alternative suggestions, or the town or parish council will put forward their own proposals and a Public
Notice displayed.
- Should agreement not be reached, then the matter is referred to
the Operations Manager and Porfolio Executive member for the Environment of the Council for a decision.
- Once agreed, the numbering is determined and the whole scheme
is confirmed to all parties involved, emergency services, utility companies and various departments
within the Council.
