Free Bus Travel

The New National Concessionary Travel Scheme for senior citizens and other concessionary applicants entitles bus pass holders to free local bus travel anywhere in England.

Who can apply?

If you live in the Breckland District and one of the categories are applicable to you, then you are eligible to apply for a free bus pass.

People aged 60 or over  

1. People who are registered blind/partially sighted

2. People who are severely or profoundly deaf

3. People who cannot speak

4. People who have a disability or have suffered an injury which has a serious long-term effect on their ability to walk

5. People who are without the use of both arms

6. People who have a learning disability

7. People who are prohibited from driving a motor vehicle on medical grounds

Subject to an acceptable form of identification and evidence.

What services can the permit be used on?

The bus pass can be used for off-peak travel on local buses anywhere in England with the following exceptions:

•Services not open to the general public i.e. work services

•Excursions or tours

•Long distance local services (except where there is an agreement to carry short distance passengers)

•Special Services

•Travel in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (Some local authorities on the border of these countries do have the discretion to make special arrangements. This could include short cross border travel however this will be at the discretion of the local authority)

How to apply

Online

If you have a printer, you can download our Free Bus Travel Permit leaflet and application form for you to complete and return to Breckland Council with the relevant documents and one passport sized photograph.

Post

If you’re unable to download and print the application, we can post you a bus pass leaflet and application form for you to complete and return to us. All you need to do is complete the Do It Online form.

Telephone

You can contact our Customer Contact Centre who will be happy to answer any more questions you may have and post a form and leaflet to you.

In person

You can visit one of our Customer Service Centres who always have a supply of applications forms. They can help you to complete the application form and verify your documents. The bus pass will be sent to you within 7 – 10 working days once the application form has been processed.

You will need to supply one recent passport sized photograph.

Validity, Renewals and Lost Permits

The bus pass is valid for four years if you are a senior citizen and for other concessionary applicants the bus pass is valid for one year.

The date of expiry is printed on the front of your permit.

Should you lose or misplace or have your permit stolen, inform us immediately. There is a £8.00 replacement fee..
