09/12/19 - Thetford shop fined for illegal disposal of waste

Breckland Council has fined a Thetford business for using domestic residential bins to dispose of their commercial waste.

The Council's Enforcement Team were alerted to the issue by local residents near Breckland House in Thetford. After using CCTV footage, the team witnessed two members of the business's staff depositing a large amount of trade waste in domestic bins. The business has now been fined £75 - rising to £110 if not paid quickly - and, having previously received two written warnings about their conduct and the correct disposal of waste, will now be closely monitored to ensure the correct waste disposal laws are followed going forward.

Cllr Alison Webb, Executive Member for Housing, Health and Environment at Breckland Council, commented "I am disheartened to hear that after being warned on two previous occasions about incorrect waste disposal the business still failed to comply with the law. Although this is a relatively modest fine I sincerely hope it sends a clear message to this and other businesses that we will not continue to tolerate inconsiderate and illegal activity and we will consider stronger measures if it proves necessary in the future."
