17/06/20: Celebrate Armed Forces Day with an online salute
People across Breckland are being urged to support this month's annual Armed Forces Day celebration by posting a salute online.
Armed Forces Day will this year be held on Saturday, June 27 and is held annually to celebrate service personnel and their families around the world, promoting peace, delivering much-needed aid, tackling drug smugglers, providing security and combating terrorism. Many members of the services are currently working on the frontline against Covid-19, in testing centres around the UK.
The council will be raising a flag at its offices to mark the occasion, but is also calling on residents in Breckland to take a selfie of them saluting and share it on social media using the hashtag #ArmedForcesDay2020 and #OurBreckland on June 27.
Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen, Breckland Council's Leader, also volunteers for the Ministry of Defence. "Our district has a strong tradition of supporting and celebrating the Armed Forces and their families and it is unfortunate that due to the pandemic this year's Armed Forces Day will largely be celebrated virtually. The pandemic has really helped bring out the best in our communities and I hope people will get involved in recognising this special day by sharing a salute online," he said.
The Armed Forces Flag will be flying at the council's Dereham office, to also mark Reserves Day (Wednesday, June 24), Veterans Day (Thursday, June 25) and Cadets Day (Friday, June 26).
