COVID-19: Temporary partition screens in hackney carriage and private hire vehicles

The council's licensing team want to support the hackney carriage and private hire trade to work safely throughout the coronavirus outbreak and assisting, where possible, to mitigate the contact risks to drivers and passengers.

We will allow (as a temporary measure), the installation of a protective screen whilst social distancing requirements are in place.

Please note:

  • Any fittings and equipment must comply with the Road Vehicle (Construction and Use) Regulations.
  • Insurers must be notified of any modifications made to the vehicle.
  • The screen must not affect the structural integrity of the vehicle, or interfere with any manufacturer fitted safety equipment, such as airbags.
  • The screen must be clear and transparent and can only be fitted across the rear of both front seats, creating a partition between the front and rear cabin of the vehicle.
  • Screens must be securely fitted in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and be compatible with the make and model of vehicle.
  • Screens should not impede the driver's vision, movement or communication with passengers.
  • The screen should not impede driver or passenger entry or exit to the vehicle and any sharp edges are covered.
  • You must notify the licensing team that you are installing or have installed a temporary partition screen. You may be asked to bring your vehicle in for inspection to check fitting.
  • It is expected that you will remove any partition within 21 days of the Government lifting all COVID-19 restrictions.
