Discretionary Business Rate Reduction Scheme
A scheme is now in place to grant discretionary rate relief to help reduce the number of vacant properties and help new businesses achieve their growth potential. The aim of this scheme is to provide vibrant town centres and the opportunity to create the right environment for businesses to achieve their growth plans, create jobs and contribute to the economic development in the five market towns of Breckland.
The scheme will start on 1st April 2018 and will be available for a 12 month period, offering up to 80% business rate relief during this period. The scheme will be available to businesses who occupy vacant properties within our town centres. Under the scheme retail businesses - including shops, restaurants and others can apply through a simple application process to receive a reduction of up to 80% on those premises for the first year.
Businesses can apply to the scheme at anytime between now and 31 March 2019, with any business rates reductions coming into force from 1 April 2018 or, going forward, 12 months from the approval date. A decision is likely to be made within 7 working days from receipt of your application. Awards are discretionary, and meeting the criteria does not automatically trigger relief. The 'Discretionary business rates eligibility guidelines' can be found here:
We have reviewed the boundaries for the scheme within our five market towns; maps can be found below - these have been determined together with the town councils and in line with Breckland's emerging Local Plan primary shopping area boundaries. New retail businesses that occupy premises outside these boundaries can apply through the scheme and will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
