10/07/17: District's blueprint for growth receives councillor backing

Local Plan documents that will shape future growth and development in the district until 2036 were endorsed by Breckland's Cabinet today (10 July).

Once adopted, the Local Plan will set out the policies used to determine planning applications and the location of sites to meet housing, retail and employment requirements.

Having received support from the Council's Overview and Scrutiny Commission last week (6 July) and Cabinet approval today, the Local Plan proposals will now go to Council on 27 July for consideration. If ratified, the draft Local Plan will then be subject to a six week pre-submission publication period in late August and September during which the proposals can be reviewed by members of the public.

Cllr Gordon Bambridge, Breckland Council Executive Member for Growth explained the purpose of the Plan. He said: "This is our opportunity to shape future growth in Breckland to ensure that, as far as possible, future development meets the needs and aspirations of local people, and helps the district continue to prosper.

"We have consulted widely throughout the development of the draft Plan, and the views and knowledge of local people have played a major role in shaping the document endorsed today."

These public consultations - on planning policies and the scale and location of new development - included three six-week public consultations and a number of open events held in each of the five market towns.
During the pre-submission period, the Council will be inviting views as to the 'soundness' of the draft Local Plan - i.e. whether  it is consistent with national policy, and sets out an appropriate strategy to meet the housing and infrastructure requirements of the district. During this period the draft Plan can be viewed online and copies of the document will be available for inspection in the Council's Customer Service Centres in the market towns and also local libraries.

Once the pre-submission publication period is over, the responses will be collated and reviewed before the document is submitted to the Secretary of State for the Examination in Public.
