03/10/17: Norfolk council shares its commercial experience on the national stage

3 October 2017

Breckland Council has been represented at a national conference held in London, where representatives shared the organisation's experience of delivering commercially-minded regeneration projects.

The district council's Deputy Leader, Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen, and Commercial Property Manager, Ralph Burton, were guest speakers at LLG Legal Training's Commercialisation Conference held yesterday (2 October). It was primarily aimed at legal professionals working in the public sector, including councils across the country.

They told the room of 60 delegates about the various stages the council went through to set up the Breckland Bridge joint venture company, which is run in partnership with development experts The Land Group.

Breckland Council was asked to present a case study at the conference after scooping the prestigious Commercialism in the Property Estate category award at the Municipal Journal (MJ) Awards 2017 over the summer. The award recognises councils who take an innovative approach to commercial investment in order to generate more income for their organisation.

The Breckland Bridge partnership has already delivered the £8m Thetford Riverside leisure complex, built more than a dozen new homes in Mileham, and is on track to construct new houses in Attleborough. These projects are bringing significant benefits to local residents, including creating employment opportunities and new homes.

Cllr Chapman-Allen commented: "We are very proud of our commercial approach, which brings in around the same levels of income as the council receives in district council tax. That helps keep the pressure off local people while protecting frontline services from national cuts.

"We were delighted to win the MJ award earlier this year and were only too happy to share some of the knowledge we've picked up along the way to help other councils and public bodies to successfully implement a similar approach in their areas of the country."
