02/05/18: Join Thetford's biggest ever litter pick
2 May 2018
Residents and local businesses in Thetford are being invited to join together on Friday 11 May and create the largest single town litter pick in Norfolk, possibly in the UK.
The initiative originated from Breckland Council and Thetford Town Council as part of the 'Great Plastic Pick Up'. The litter pick will consist of a guided walk of some of Thetford's historic points of interest, collecting litter along the way, plus a stop for refreshments courtesy of Grand Central restaurant at Thetford Riverside leisure complex. As an added bonus, everyone who helps on the day will receive a complimentary cinema ticket from Thetford's three-screen The Light Cinema and an offer voucher for Grand Central.
Cllr Paul Claussen, Breckland Council's Executive Member for Place, said: "This is a great opportunity to not only get out and help keep Thetford and its historic sites looking their best, but also to learn more about them and meet other residents. It's fantastic to hear that local businesses are also supporting this event by providing refreshments and cinema tickets, a real community effort."
The 'Great Plastic Pick Up' is supported by Keep Britain Tidy and will run over the weekend from 11 - 13 May. Anyone can sign up to be part of the weekend by registering with www.greatplasticpickup.org, and the first 3,000 events will receive 30 special 100% recyclable bags suitable for plastic collections. By signing up online you can state whether your litter pick is private or public, and if public others can log in and register to join it. If you miss the 3,000 cut off, don't panic, you can still contact Breckland Council and they will provide suitable bags for you to use. To encourage the market towns around Breckland to get involved and organise their own events the council are also organising special rubbish collection points for Monday morning.
Anyone interested in getting involved, either in the Thetford litter pick or around the other market towns, should contact Breckland Council's Communities team, who are helping to coordinate the event: firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01362 656870. In Thetford everyone is meeting at Castle Park toilets on Castle Street at 9am on Friday 11 May, with the plan to set off around 9.30am. The walk will stop at Thetford Riverside between 10-10.30am, and will eventually finish at around 11.30am. The whole route is not expected to take more than two hours and will be at a gentle pace, so is suitable for all ages.
