08/11/18: Businesses encouraged to sign up to Purple Tuesday accessibility commitment

Breckland Council is encouraging local businesses to consider how they could make their businesses more accessible to people who are disabled. The call comes ahead of Purple Tuesday, the UK's accessible shopping day, which takes place on Tuesday, 13 November.

Purple Tuesday is a new national campaign, organised by disability organisation Purple - with the endorsement of the Department for Work and Pensions and support from a steering group of Purple Tuesday launch partners including Argos, Barclays, Marks & Spencer, and Sainsbury's. The aim is to encourage retailers to make shopping experiences more accessible and inclusive for disabled customers.

It is up to each participating business to consider how they could improve the experience for their disabled customers going forward, but examples include introducing regular 'quiet hours' for those with sensory issues, improving store wayfinding, and introducing more inclusive marketing and product photography.

Councillor Paul Clausen, Breckland Council's Executive Member for Place, commented: "Almost 20% of UK adults, around 13 million people, have a disability. This initiative is about increasing awareness of the needs of disabled customers and to encourage businesses to make changes that improve customer experience in the future. It is important that nobody feels excluded from shopping on our high streets so I hope local shops will be inspired by Purple Tuesday to consider the changes they could make - big or small - which would make their businesses more welcoming to all customers throughout the year."

The Purple Tuesday website has a range of resources available to help businesses assess their accessibility, including considering their website design, parking arrangements, communication, navigating the store, toilet facilities, training, and events.
