13/12/2022: Reduce, reuse and recycle for a greener Christmas

Breckland Council is asking residents to help the environment this Christmas by reducing, reusing, and recycling festive waste.

People are being reminded that things like glass bottles and jars, tins and plastic tubs and trays can go into their household recycling bin, ensuring they can be recycled to make new products.  But not everything can be recycled, with residents are being advised to avoid using cards and wrapping paper covered with glitter, as these can't be recycled.

Food waste is a major contributor to increased rubbish collected over the Christmas period and as a result residents are being asked to carefully plan food quantities for family meals and festive parties to help stop food going to waste and support the environment.

Natural Christmas trees can be recycled via Breckland Council garden brown bin service, simply leave it beside your brown garden bin ready on your normal collection. Residents can also take natural Christmas trees to be recycled at a local recycling centre or if the tree still has a root system in place, simply replant it in your garden for next year.

Cllr Helen Crane, Executive Member for Waste, Environmental Health, Licensing and Sustainability, commented: "This Christmas we should think about how we can have a more sustainable celebration that will help the environment.  Being greener with our festive consumption and pledging to reduce, reuse and recycle more is a great way to start 2023."
