12/11/2025: Future of Breckland community groups secured after purchasing land from district council
Breckland Council has sold two pieces of land in Thetford in a move which will secure the future of two esteemed community organisations.
The council has sold the land at Two Mile Bottom to two esteemed community organisations: the Breckland Model Aero Club and Bush Adventures, with the Norfolk Scouts continuing as an integral part of the site. This initiative underscores Breckland Council's commitment to fostering community spirit and supporting local groups that enrich the lives of residents.
The Breckland Model Aero Club, who have been active for over 50 years, will acquire a portion of the land at Two Mile Bottom. This acquisition will enable the club to continue offering its popular and educational aero modelling activities to enthusiasts of all ages.
Bush Adventures, working in collaboration with the Norfolk Scouts, will take on the area that includes the Bidwell Centre. The Norfolk Scouts have called this location home for more than 40 years, and the continuation of their presence is assured with this new agreement.
Breckland Council is thrilled to support these community groups in their endeavours, ensuring that they can continue to provide much-loved services and programs that benefit the community.
Cllr Paul Hewett, Executive Member for Property, Projects and Procurement, said: "We are proud to support the Breckland Model Aero Club and Bush Adventures in their missions to engage and inspire our community. This land sale is a testament to our commitment to fostering community initiatives that bring people together and create positive impacts."
John Gillingham, Chairman for the Breckland Model Aero Club, shared his excitement: "Having flown model aircraft on this land for more than 50 years, we are grateful to Breckland Council for the opportunity to purchase our flying field. This has been funded through our members and a £500 grant from Thetford Town Council, which will enable this community activity to continue."
Chuck (Paul Norris), Founder of Bush Adventure UK said: "Bush Adventures UK C.I.C. is committed to making nature accessible to all through community, education, and outdoor adventure that supports mental wellbeing. As new guardians of the Two Mile Bottom site and the Bidwell Centre, we're dedicated to protecting and improving these spaces for future generations. Working in partnership with Norfolk Scouts and their members has always been central to our vision for the site, and we're proud to be investing to enhance this valued community asset."
Tim Rowe, County Chair of Trustees for Norfolk Scoutscommented, "We are thrilled that our home at Two Mile Bottom is secured for the future. This support from Breckland Council allows us to do this and, by working collaboratively with Bush Adventures, it allows Norfolk Scouts access to the site for years to come allowing the continued delivery of valuable programs to young people in the area, fostering skills and friendships that last a lifetime."
Breckland Council looks forward to seeing these community groups thrive and continue their vital contributions to the region.
