Household Food Waste Collection Service coming soon

What's new?

From summer 2026, every household in Breckland will receive a weekly food waste collection service, marking a major step forward in making recycling simpler and greener across the district.

What are the benefits to me?

The new service will mean you can keep food waste separate from general waste, so no more peelings, leftovers, bones and out-of-date food items, in your general waste bin. The collection will help reduce odours because the food bin is emptied every week. This will be particularly useful during the warmer months.

It will free up space in your general waste bin because the food bin is 23 litres and emptied every week (equal to 46 litres per fortnight).

It helps you save money. By using the food bin, you see how much food is being thrown away and make changes to shopping habits. For more information visit the Food Savvy website. (opens new window)

And the good news doesn't stop there! Food waste we collect from across the district will be turned into renewable energy and the bi-product used in agriculture. That means food you throw away could potentially become fuel used to cook a meal in the future.
