Food waste frequently asked questions

Why are you introducing a separate food waste collection?

Under the new "Simpler Recycling" legislation, all local authorities in England in 2026, must collect core recyclable waste from households, including food waste.

What are the benefits of recycling food waste?

- Reducing the amount of waste in your green (general waste) bin. We will be removing the food waste every week.
- Saving money - when householders see how much food they are throwing away, they begin to shop smarter. To find out more, visit the Food Savvy website. (opens new window)
- Reducing smelly waste because it is collected every week

What bins will I use?

We will deliver a 7 litre blue caddy for your kitchen and a 23 litre blue food waste bin for outside. When it is delivered the caddy will be inside the food bin.
If you are in a flat/communal property you will have a smaller 7 litre blue caddy for the kitchen and then a 120 litre blue bin in the communal bin area

When will I get my new bins?

The new service will launch in mid-2026. We will contact you nearer the time and let you know exactly when we will deliver the bins and when the service starts.
Follow us and keep up to date with the latest news on this. You can sign up for alerts (opens new window) or follow us on social media. (opens new window) We will also be announcing any key changes on this in the local press and in our resident's magazine.

How often will food waste be collected?

Your food waste will be collected every week.

What items can I put in the food waste bin?

 - Dairy
 - Fish
 - Fruit and vegetable peelings, cores, scraps
 - Meat & Bones

If food bin has incorrect items in it, we will not empty it. Incorrect items must be removed and the bin will be emptied the following week.

Resident's will be given a 7 litre blue caddy for their kitchen and then a larger 120 litre blue bin will be provided in the communal bin area.

How is the collected food waste processed, and where does it go?

The collected food waste is sent to a facility, where it is converted into bio gas for use locally. This also creates useful bi-products used in agriculture

Will my green and black bin collections change?

No
