New Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction Claim

When making a new claim for Housing Benefit and/or Council Tax Reduction we require the name, national insurance number and date of birth for all adults living in the property.

Evidence which is required to enable assessment is:

  • Proof of rent
  • Evidence of student status (if applicable)
  • Evidence of property capital (if applicable)

You may be asked to provide based on the information given at the time of the claim:

  • Proof of income for all adults in the property
  • Evidence of student status for Non-Dependants if applicable
  • Evidence of child care costs if applicable
  • Evidence of capital above the capital limit:
    • If you are pension age, evidence is required for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims if your capital is over £16,000.
    • If you are working age, evidence is required for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims if your capital is over £10,000. 

If you receive Universal Credit then you will not need to provide any income details because these will be provided by The Department for Work and Pensions. You may need to provide your Universal Credit Journal showing the breakdown of your award and the date the claim started.​​​​​

Please note: the above is a list of most commonly requested information, each individual claim is unique. Once the application is complete, it may be that further information is requested depending on the details entered into the claim.

If any further evidence is needed, we will contact you. We will usually do this by email, if you have one.

If you aren't able to provide all the evidence we need, you must let us know. You will need to tell us what information is missing and when you can provide it.
