Request to have a Proxy Vote

Applying for a proxy vote is changing from 31 October 2023. Proxy vote applications received on or after 31 October will not be processed and will be returned to the elector.

If an elector is unable to get to their polling station on election day they can ask someone they trust to vote on their behalf. This is called a proxy vote and the person casting the vote on behalf of the elector is referred to as their proxy. Your appointed proxy must be registered to vote and be eligible to vote in the election they are appointed for.

You must be registered to vote or have recently registered to vote before you can apply for a proxy vote.

Online proxy vote applications will be available for a particular election or referendum or for a definite or indefinite period for overseas electors and service voters.

You will need to provide your National Insurance number when applying online or by paper form to prove your identity.

If you wish to vote by proxy we recommend you register to vote and apply for a proxy vote well in advance of election deadlines, in case we need to ask you for additional information to verify your identity.

The new regulations will put a limit on how many electors a person may act as a proxy for. The maximum number of electors a proxy can vote on behalf of will be four, and no more than two of these can be domestic electors. Domestic electors are those who are neither service voters or overseas electors.

It is an offence:

• for a person to knowingly appoint a proxy who is already acting as a proxy for two or more domestic electors
• to vote as proxy for more than two domestic electors
• for a person who is registered as an overseas elector or a service voter to knowingly appoint a proxy who is already acting as a proxy for four or more electors (of which no more than two electors can be domestic electors)
• to vote as proxy for more than four electors (of which no more than two electors can be domestic electors)
