BFOI-016208 - CCTV

CCTV camera numbers, faults, repairs, and system reviews within the council area.

Request

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act. In order to assist you with this request I am outlining my query as specifically as possible.

I would like to have:

  • Information on the number of CCTV cameras in your area
  • Information on the number of cameras that are faulty or non-operational across your area to date (March 2nd 2026) and also during the following periods 2024, 2025 and the current 2026 period. This can be broken down into months or years, however the data is held
  • A percentage and number breakdown on reasons for them not being in use, ie vandalised, faulty, outdated equipment etc
  • Where there were faulty cameras, details on how long it took for those faults to be fixed, including the date a camera was reported faulty and the date it was fully operational again
  • Details on how often CCTV systems in your area are reviewed, and when the systems were last reviewed or audited as a whole to check suitability rather than fault fixing specific cameras

I would be interested in any information held by your organisation regarding my request. I understand that I do not have to specify particular files or documents and that it is the department's responsibility to provide the information I require. If you need further clarification please contact me by email.

Response

  • Information on the number of CCTV cameras in your area

Under Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, we are not required to provide information in response to a request if it is already reasonably accessible by other means. This information is available, see link for information: Community Safety - Breckland Council.

  • Information on the number of cameras that are faulty or non-operational

Cameras will of course break down from time to time, but we do not hold any data to suggest any of our cameras are non-operational. If they become non-operational they will be fixed, repaired or replaced as soon as possible. This is covered by our maintenance contract. Therefore there would be no cameras that were not operational for any significant period of time.

  • Percentage and number breakdown on reasons for cameras not being in use

Not held, but the reasons would primarily be due to breakdowns. There have been a couple of incidences of vandalism in the period described but the cameras were quickly replaced from stock or via rapid order.

  • Details on how long faults took to be fixed

This information is not held, but under normal circumstances faults would be fixed within a few working days. The longest repair period may have related to vandalism which required new equipment and preventative items, which may have taken around a couple of weeks (single camera issue).

  • Details on CCTV system reviews or audits

We have assumed that the nature of your request relates to CCTV system functionality and reliability. This was last reviewed in February 2026.
