17/11/2023: Breckland Council Clamps Down on Fly-Tipping

As part of Breckland Council's responsibility to protect the environmental health of the district it has announced that three fly tipping cases have been resolved.

The first incident, adjacent to the A11 in Thetford, involved office furniture being dumped on land owned by the Forestry Commission. Following a thorough investigation, it was determined that an unlicensed waste carrier had been utilized, resulting in fines totalling £800. The individual responsible for the dumping has since collected the waste.  Council officials highlighted that utilizing licensed carriers or accessing Breckland Council's cost-effective waste removal services could have prevented this incident.

The second case occurred at a Sainsbury's car park in Attleborough, where CCTV operators observed a driver illegally discarding various items including bags of household waste. Through CCTV footage and cooperation with the DVLA, the vehicle owner was identified. A £445 fine was imposed.

The most recent incident occurred on the A47 near Scarning. The roadside bins were found overflowing with rotting fruit, eggs and vegetables, accompanied by discarded bags of waste and packaging. Through a diligent investigation by Serco Officers, the fly tip was linked to a business in North Norfolk.  A fixed penalty of £400 was issued.

Commenting on these incidents, Cllr Helen Crane, Executive Member for Waste at Breckland Council said: "These fines reinforce our stance against illegal dumping. We urge residents and businesses to responsibly dispose of waste through authorised channels. We're determined to maintain our area's cleanliness and will take robust action against those who disregard the law."
