Breckland Council has welcomed an announcement by Central Government which will see Thetford benefit from £20m new funding.

The money was committed the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt as part of the national Budget issued today (6 March).

The funding is part of a £400m expansion of the Government's Long Term Plan for Towns programme, which aims to support regeneration and growth of key locations. Thetford was named among 20 sites across the country which are set to receive cash from the initiative.

Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen, Breckland Council's Leader, commented: "This is fantastic news for Thetford and the Breckland district as a whole.

"Thetford is the gateway to Norfolk, with huge potential for the future. As a district council, alongside our partners such as our MP Liz Truss, we have been making the case to Government and calling for major investment for some time, so I'm delighted that the town will now receive significant new investment.

"We've worked closely with our residents and stakeholders as part of our Future Breckland programme to develop a vision and plan for the town and surrounding area and I'm confident this new money will help us deliver against the priorities we've agreed with local people, and ultimately have a positive impact for people and businesses in and around Thetford."
