02/05/2025: Successful installation of Solar Panels at Dereham Leisure Centre

Dereham Leisure Centre is now more energy efficient than ever after installing solar panels on its roof.
It is expected that the solar panels will meet around 35% of the centre's electricity needs and reduce the building's carbon emissions by as much as 48 tonnes each year as its gas use will be reduced.
The solar panels were recently installed as part of several initiatives that will make Breckland's leisure centres in Thetford and Dereham more energy efficient, reduce running costs, and cut carbon emissions. At Dereham Leisure Centre, the first six months of operation have delivered savings of over £13,000. However, due to seasonal variations in energy generation, this figure is expected to rise significantly, reaching over £39,000 by the end of the first year - over double what the centre has saved so far.
The solar panels cost £265,000 and were funded by the Central Government and Sport England £60 million Swimming Pool Support Fund. The project was delivered in collaboration with Parkwood Leisure, Parkwood Project Management and Breckland Council.
Cllr Tristan Ashby, Executive Member for Health and Communities, commented: "I am delighted to announce the successful completion of the solar panel installation at Dereham Leisure Centre. This project represents a significant step forward in our commitment to support the long-term sustainability of public leisure. By harnessing solar power, we are not only reducing the centre's carbon footprint but also setting a positive example for the entire community."
Glen Hall, Managing Director of Parkwood Leisure, added: "We are pleased to have partnered Breckland Council in supporting this project. It is a great step forward in promoting sustainability in the leisure industry."
