23/06/2025: Breckland Council to Join UK Age Friendly Communities Network

Age-Friendly Communities Network

At the June meeting of Breckland Council's Cabinet today (23 June 2025), members voted to approve a resolution to join the UK Network of Age Friendly Communities, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older residents across the district.

Councillor Tristan Ashby, Executive Member for Health and Communities, led the initiative as part of the Council's Mindful Towns and Villages priority. The move aligns Breckland with a growing alliance of UK and global cities and communities striving to create environments that promote active ageing and social inclusion.

The Age Friendly Communities agenda encompasses a comprehensive action plan tailored to the needs of older residents, focusing on:

  • Accessible public spaces and transportation

  • Age-attuned housing standards and neighborhood design

  • Healthier, integrated local services and social opportunities

  • Economic inclusion and lifelong learning opportunities

Approval from Cabinet authorises officers to formalise Breckland's affiliation with the national network. Membership opens doors to shared expertise, funding possibilities, and collaborative best practice, ensuring Breckland can tap into national programmes to benefit its older population.

Breckland's Executive Member for Communities and Health, Councillor Tristan Ashby, commented: "Joining the Age Friendly Communities Network marks a positive step forward for Breckland. It shows our dedication to creating communities where older residents can thrive, and where housing, health services, transport, leisure, and engagement are designed for all ages."

Council officers will now work closely with network coordinators to develop and publish an Age Friendly strategy. This will include a progress framework and measurable targets to improve the district's "age-friendliness." Residents and community organisations will be invited to contribute to the strategy through engagement over the coming months.
