27/06/2025: Breckland invites veterans to special brunch to commemorate Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day: 28 June 2025
Today, 27 June, Breckland Council hosted its first Armed Forces Community Brunch to show its continued support and gratitude for the district's Armed Forces Community, while connecting veterans to the regular Breakfast Clubs across the district.
Veterans and uniformed guests gathered at Dereham Football Club for a relaxed brunch that offered them the chance to connect, socialise, and share memories of their time in service. The attendees were also given resources signposting them to further support if needed.
The event coincided with national Armed Forces Week, observed this year from 22 to 28 June, with Armed Forces Day itself being commemorated on 28 June. Each year, Breckland takes this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to its Armed Forces Community, from currently serving personnel to veterans, cadets, and their families. The week also serves to raise awareness of challenges sometimes faced by members of the community, such as mental health issues and social isolation, while highlighting the support available through the council.
Earlier this week, Breckland also raised the Armed Forces Day flag to launch a week of internal commemorative and fundraising activities, partnering with Combat2Coffee and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Present at the brunch today was Cllr Paul Claussen, who delivered a heartfelt speech dedicated to Breckland's armed forces - past, present, and future.
Cllr Paul Claussen, Executive Member at Breckland Council with Special Responsibility for Armed Forces, said: "At Breckland, we are proud to stand with our Armed Forces Community. I was delighted and honoured to attend today's brunch, which was just one way for us to show our gratitude, strengthen connections, and ensure that those who have served - and continue to serve - know they are valued, respected, and not alone."
