30/06/2025: Breckland continues to clamp down on fly-tipping as the council marks Anti-Social Behaviour Awareness Week

As part of Antisocial Behaviour (ASB) Awareness Week, Breckland Council continues to combat littering and illegal waste dumping in the district. The council's Environmental Enforcement Team has given fixed penalty notice's totalling £1,300 for three recent fly-tipping incidents.
One case took place on Ripon Way in Thetford. A member of the public discarded bags of household waste near a public litter bin. Following local door to door investigations, the enforcement team were able to identify the person responsible for the fly-tip and they were issued a Fixed Penalty Notice of £400.
A further fly-tipping occurrence was brought to the council's attention through reports from members of the public. Several bags of household waste were being left by a dog bin on Canterbury way in Thetford over the course of several months. Enforcement officers were able to identify those responsible through personal details contained within the waste. As this was an ongoing issue, they were fined £500.
In another Thetford incident, CCTV operatives witnessed a sofa being fly-tipped at Breckland House on St Nicholas Street. The images were shared on the Breckland Surveillance Identification page and social media pages, leading to a member of the public coming forward to help identify the person responsible, resulting in a £400 fine.
Cllr Helen Crane, Breckland Council's Executive Member for Waste, Environmental Health, Licensing and Sustainability, said: "These fly-tipping cases perfectly demonstrate that we will use every option available to track down the perpetrators of fly-tipping and environmental crime. Our Enforcement Team works hard to ensure that every possible avenue is covered, including our CCTV surveillance webpage, door-to-door enquiries, searching waste for clues and working with the vast majority of law-abiding members of the public who simply don't want to see this tolerated in the district. All the items that had been dumped could have been taken to a local recycling centre and responsibly disposed of free of charge. We hope that by increasing awareness, we can deter future incidents and inspire a collective responsibility towards maintaining our beautiful district."
