30/12/2025: Residents urged to make the most of leisure facilities as they pursue New Year's Resolutions to 'get fit for '26'
As the New Year begins and a number of residents make a commitment to 'get fit for '26', Breckland Council is encouraging residents to make the most of the wide range of leisure opportunities available across the district.
From swimming, gyms and group fitness classes at Breckland's leisure centres, to free and flexible activities that can be enjoyed at home or in local parks, there truly is an activity for everyone - whatever their age, ability or fitness goal.
Residents looking for structured activities can dive into swimming sessions, lift weights in well-equipped gyms, try rowing machines or ellipticals, or join group fitness classes that offer motivation and a strong sense of community.
For those who prefer the outdoors or low-cost options, Breckland's green open spaces and parks provide the perfect setting for running, cycling, walking the dog, hiking, or even stair climbing. Activities such as gardening, yoga, skipping or dance workouts can also be done from the comfort of home and are great ways to stay active without leaving home or incurring costs.
Cllr Tristan Ashby, Breckland Council's Executive Member for Health and Communities, commented: "Many residents will be inspired to improve their health and wellbeing as we go into the New Year, so I hope they will look to the excellent leisure facilities and beautiful open spaces we have available in our district to support them to achieve their goals.
"Whether you enjoy the energy of our leisure centres or prefer free activities you can do at home or in the park, there's an activity for everyone that can boost your fitness in the new year. Getting active doesn't have to be complicated - small steps can make a big difference."
Breckland Council is committed to helping residents lead healthier, more active lives and encourages everyone to explore the many ways to move more in 2026 - at a pace and in a way that works for them. People are advised to consult their doctor before starting or significantly increasing fitness activity, particularly if they have pre-existing conditions.
