20/01/2026: Agricultural community comes together for first Big Breckland Breakfast
Members from across Breckland's agricultural community came together this week to talk about the challenges faced by those living and working in rural areas, discuss how communities can better support one another, and access informal support.
Breckland Council organised the free 'Big Breckland Breakfast', which took place on Monday (19 January) at Algy's Farm Café in Bintree.
The event formed part of the council's Inspiring Communities commitment to promoting supportive and connected communities and was funded through the Mindful Towns and Villages mental health programme.
The event was held in recognition that people working in agricultural industries may face unique pressures linked to their profession as well as increased risks of loneliness and isolation, especially during the darker and colder winter months.
The Big Breckland Breakfast was well-attended by farmers, their families, and other agricultural professionals, who said they valued the informal, welcoming space to come together and talk openly about their experiences. They enjoyed the chance to catch up socially and speak with a number of organisations in attendance. These include YANA (You Are Not Alone), Farming Community Network, Public Health, Community Action Norfolk and representatives from the district and county councils.
Supporting rural and agricultural communities remains a key priority for Breckland Council, which will continue working across services to deliver initiatives that strengthen rural networks and promote the health and wellbeing of people living and working in the Breckland countryside.
Cllr Tristan Ashby, Executive Member for Health and Communities, said: "It was fantastic for people across our rural communities to come together for the Big Breckland Breakfast. The event showed just how valuable it is to create opportunities that allow people to connect, share experiences, and support one another. We look forward to building on this success to ensure our rural communities continue to thrive."
Cllr Paul Claussen, Executive Member for Economic Development and Growth, added: "It was a privilege to meet with members of our rural community. The agricultural sector is key to Breckland's economy and events like this play an important role in ensuring rural businesses know where to access advice and support, strengthening long-term growth and resilience in our district."
