Statement following meeting on 26 March 2026

The Dereham Taskforce met on 26 March 2026 at Elizabeth House, bringing together representatives from local councils, community organisations, public services, and partner agencies to review progress and agree next steps in supporting the town and its residents.

The Taskforce continues to work collaboratively to address key local challenges, including housing, community safety, and access to services.

Key updates and actions:

  • Accommodation and Housing (NR19)

There was an update from Breckland Council on the use of NR19 and they confirmed that they only had one household placed there at present.  After a long debate, including contributions from the new community representatives, it was agreed that further work was still needed to be done to clarify the status of NR19 to taskforce members and then the wider public.

At the next meeting, Breckland will provide a detailed summary of the accommodation arrangements at NR19, including the compliance and inspection processes. The Taskforce requested that details of planning applications pertaining to NR19 be provided to them as soon as they can be collated and that a planning officer be present at the next meeting. The Taskforce will also explore alternative ways to meet emergency housing demand without increased reliance on this provision.

  • The Link - Community Hub

Work is underway to improve communication and engagement around The Link. A weekly schedule of available services will be shared, and efforts will be made to ensure the centre is welcoming and accessible to all residents.

  • Withburga House

Updates on the ongoing enforcement proceedings will continue to be shared with the Taskforce to ensure transparency.

  • Public Space Protection Order (PSPO)

The PSPO has been approved and is currently within a 60-day implementation period. The scope of the order can be adjusted if required, and monitoring of its use will be ongoing.

  • Community Safety

While recorded crime rates have decreased, the Taskforce recognises that public perception of safety remains a key concern. Communication and engagement will therefore be strengthened to ensure residents feel informed and reassured.

  • Street Wardens

There is support for introducing street wardens in Dereham. A formal proposal will be progressed for approval, with the aim of enhancing community safety and visibility in the town.

  • Youth Engagement

A proposal to fund a dedicated [existing] youth club and associated activities for an initial six-month period was supported. This initiative aims to provide early intervention while longer-term solutions are explored.

  • Business and Community Representation

Community representatives will work together to strengthen business engagement within the Taskforce, ensuring local perspectives are reflected in future discussions and decisions.

  • Communications

A single, consistent communications approach has been agreed. This will include both achievements and challenges to ensure transparency and build trust with the public.

The Taskforce remains committed to working openly and collaboratively to support Dereham and its residents.

The next meeting will take place on 23 April 2026.
