Statement following meeting on 23 April 2026
We know there have been concerns in the community about the NR19 Hotel, and it's important to be clear, transparent, and factual about what's happening.
At the most recent Dereham Taskforce meeting, members agreed to focus entirely on this issue to ensure a full and accurate understanding. Representatives from Breckland Council's planning and housing teams attended, answered questions, and provided detailed updates.
The discussion was open, direct, and constructive, with a shared goal: making sure the community has clear and reliable information.
Here's what you need to know:
- The building is safe, legal, and subject to inspections that go beyond statutory requirements.
- While part of the property previously operated as a hotel, it is currently being used as residents' main accommodation.
- A planning breach relating to the removal of a communal kitchen has been identified, and action has already been instructed to resolve this as quickly as possible.
- Use of the building for emergency accommodation has significantly reduced, following major investment by local authorities in alternative housing.
- The property is currently treated as three separate units due to historic planning arrangements—something that is complex and not ideal.
The Taskforce has agreed that work should now begin to bring the property under a single, clearer planning and housing framework. This will improve oversight, transparency, and accountability moving forward.
Updates will be shared as progress is made.
Importantly, the Taskforce will now broaden its focus to address wider issues across Dereham, including community safety in the town centre. There is a clear commitment to delivering visible, practical improvements - quickly - so residents can see that positive change is happening.
We will continue to listen, act, and keep the community informed every step of the way.
