New Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Policy

The council adopted the new Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Policy in January 2022. All applications will be considered having regard to this policy. Please email us (licensingteam@breckland.gov.uk) if you require a hard copy of this Policy.

Electronic Cigarettes

We have been asked about the use of electronic cigarettes in licensed vehicles. The advice/information we are currently giving is that:

  • While they are not illegal it would be hard to prove that they are not a real cigarette if seen by an enforcement officer passing by.
  • It does not send the correct message to the customers and could lead to abuse of the legislation.
  • Our policy states that drivers should not smoke in their vehicles.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide information when necessary.

Drug Driving Law

Have you checked theDrug Driving Law (opens new window)? This includes some prescription drugs.

Make sure that you read the information and fully understand which drugs could affect you, or you may lose your licence.
