Dereham Conservation Area Appraisal - Consultation
The public was invited to share their feedback on the Dereham Conservation Area Appraisal (PDF, 69 MB)(opens new window).
A Conservation Area is defined as "an area of special architectural or historic interest the character of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance." In Dereham, the Conservation Area was last reviewed in 1974, and public views were essential in ensuring that the update reflected the changes in the town's built environment, historical significance, and conservation needs.
This document was part of a wider effort to protect the heritage of our market towns and help our high streets thrive. By preserving their historic charm, we aimed to make these areas more attractive and successful for residents, businesses, and visitors.
As part of this document, the draft appraisal made the following proposed boundary changes:
- Areas proposed to be removed from the Conservation Area boundary due to their limited historic and architectural interest included:
- The golf course
- Northgate High School Playing field
- Quebec Hall
- Vicarage Meadows Road
- Heathfields and Humbletoft
- Areas proposed to be included in the boundary were:
- Park Road
- London Road School
- Commercial Road
- Norwich Road and Industrial Buildings
Following the public consultation and its approval, the Dereham Conservation Area Appraisal has now become official planning policy, guiding future developments and restorations.
